1,000,000 Dollar Homepage

by SMD

This story definitely falls into the “I wish I’d thought of that category”. A guy put up a website where he sells advertising space by the pixel. $1 a pixel for a page with 1,000,000 pixels on it. You have to buy a minimum of one 10 x 10 pixel block [you'll be amazed at how small and yet effective that tiny space is!] for $100. The result is the Million Dollar Home Page.

The result is a page that will resemble a billboard montage of ads. The idea was created by a college student trying to finance his education. Get this: so far he has sold over 95,000 pixels…yes that’s right, the education is paid for in a month with one clever idea.

million dollar home page How did he come up with the idea?

“It was a muggy summer’s night late in August, the time around midnight, and there I was, lying on my bed with a notepad, brainstorming ideas to make money for uni.

…so anyway, after an hour of two of jotting random things on paper, the idea seemingly popped out of nowhere. Almost like my subconscious mind had been ticking over in the background, working it all out. So it just kind of happened. That’s about it. I scribbled it down and within about 10 minutes a picture of what needed to be done had emerged.”

Here’s the myth’s that you and I can unload from our thought processes.

  1.  “It takes money to make money” – this guy is probably going to make $1,000,000 dollars from one hour of brainstorming.
  2. “There aren’t any more original ideas.”

The key seems to be that he had a steadfast desire to go to university but didn’t have any money [only a month before he was to begin] and did not want to go into debt. Take those three dramatically opposing forces and hold them all together in your brain and give them all space and magic can happen. Most people are not courageous enough to attempt an exercise like that.

In my mind the money is well earned and well deserved. Bravo.

hi! here’s something new on pixel heaven. they’ve been creative and have linked the idea to a World Cup 2006 online game… It’s really funny and a cool new combination on a football game and online advertising. check it out: Shoot till you drop ;-)
