Creating A Personal and Specific Business Plan

by SMD

>>This series is based on Michael Gerber’s excellent book The E-Myth Revisited and the article The Business Plan That Always Works from E-Myth.comPart 2 is simple and straightforward:

A heart centered business plan is very personal to the person who is following it. Don’t go outside yourself to find it. It exists inside you.

Part 3 involves finding what your heart is wants by stopping thinking. Do something that doesn’t condone thought. In my case this would be almost anything that doesn’t involve sitting at a computer. Ride a bike, walk in nature, go to bed 2 hours early or stand in the rain for an hour.

If, in theory, you are starting a business to achieve a goal like, “more free time” or “freedom from money worries”, try and give yourself a taste of what that would be like while you are writing the plan. To accomplish this, I have taken the past week off work to really get feel for a relaxed lifestyle without the weight of 9 to 5.

According to the business plan that always works it is important to have a clear understanding of the end product of the what the plan is in the scope of your entire life. The business’s purpose is to improve your quality of life.

Here’s my list of heart-centered goals:

  • freedom from having to show up at work. Not only not having a job, but also within my business, knowing that it is so well run that I can leave and it still functions without me.
  • freedom from financial worries.
  • joy of being able to treat my wife to simple luxuries.
  • enjoyment of being generous to others with my time and money.
  • enjoyment of passing on my knowledge to others and helping them achieve their financial and business goals.
  • feeling a sense of achievement of having taken an idea from a vision to a completed business.
  • to somehow facilitate the education of children about personal finance so they don’t have to learn the finance from the school of hard knocks.

Next, in part 4, we will create a declarative statement that summarizes the experience of the mature business.
