Women are the Spenders
July 26, 2005 by SMD
Being someone who spends an inordinate amount of their time online I get to notice some generalities. As I’ve been immersed in business and online money making I’ve noticed more and more that the internet is still a male dominated game.
This strikes me as curious. I know that men are, probably due to traditional mindsets, more tech orientated than women and therefore were the early online pioneers. But as entrepreneurs ARE WE ALL BLIND!
When I had my brick and mortar picture framing business, 95% of my customers were women. And in pretty much every store I go to, the women are buying, the husbands wondering around lost wishing they were back in the SUV. Here’s some quick stats:
Women are the world’s largest market.
They account for 80% of all spending by U.S. households.
They account for 70% of new business startups.
They control over half the private wealth in the United States.
This quote taken from Are You Reaching the World’s Largest Market. I see a huge opportunity to fill a gap in the internet by catering to women.
There are new blogging networks starting daily and they are almost always geeky, techy or gadgety. Have you turned on a TV lately? Every second show is home organizing, home renovation or home decorating. [Free start up idea] Will someone please start a blog network for women and make a pile of money? Of course, I wouldn’t be adverse to a small percentage for giving you the idea.

Done. Actually, there are many blog networks out there for women. However, the topics tend to center around topics that women are interested. Perhaps, there aren’t enough in the financial arena. I just added one though. Also, equally under-represented in the blogosphere are ethnic minorities — in technology in general. It was easy to see the skew at Webmaster World conference.
There IS already a blog network for, by and about women - http://www.aboutweblogs.com/
Finance is still a male dominated field. Just look at the regular participants on the finance discussion boards. But the landscape is changing, gradually.
Thanks Shai. Nice looking site, I enjoyed taking a look. Actually I suspected that there were woman’s blog networks, but I still feel they are disproportionately few.
