Billion Dollar House – Ultimate Luxury or Living Hell?

by JS

This past week Mukesh Ambani, thanks to a big jump in the Indian stock market, was handed the title of “Richest Man in the World” but sadly for him a day later it turned out to be a miscalculation.

Even so, Ambani’s correct net worth is estimated in the $50 Billion range, ranking him comfortably in the world’s top 5 richest men.

What does someone with $50 Billion do when they need new digs?

Build a billion dollar home of course! Below, thanks to Mumbai Mirror are some of the specs:

Mumbai AmbaniResidence

According to the plan, the house will rise to a height of 173.12 meters, equivalent to that of a regular 60-storeyed residential building. However, Antilia will have only 27 storeys in all, which means each floor will have a ceiling considerably higher than the current average of nearly three meters.

Six floors for parking
The first six floors will be reserved for parking alone, and that too for cars belonging only to Mukesh’s family. Space for a total of 168 ‘imported’ cars has been earmarked here.

Floor for car maintenance
Sources said the Ambanis would prefer to have all their cars serviced and maintained at an in-house service centre. This centre will be set up on the seventh floor.

Entertainment floor
The eighth floor will have an entertainment centre comprising a mini-theatre with a seating capacity of 50.

Balconies with gardens
The rooftop of the mini-theatre will serve as a garden, and immediately above that, three more balconies with terrace gardens will be independent floors.

The ‘health’ floors
While the ninth floor will a ‘refuge’ floor – meant to be used for rescue in emergencies – two floors above that will be set aside for ‘health.’ One of these will have facilities for athletics and a swimming pool, while the other will have a health club complete with the latest gym equipment.

For guests
There will be a two-storeyed glass-fronted apartment for the Ambani family’s guests above the health floors. One more refuge floor and one floor for mechanical works will be built on top of these apartments.

The four floors at the top, that will provide a view of the Arabian Sea and a superb view of the city’s skyline, will be for Mukesh, his wife Neeta, their three children and Mukesh’s mother Kokilaben.

Air space floor
According to the plan, two floors above the family’s residence will be set aside as maintenance areas, and on top of that will be an “air space floor,” which will act as a control room for helicopters landing on the helipad above.

The plan states that three helipads are to be built on the terrace.

The place will require 600 full time staff to keep it running on a day to day basis!

I know we’ve all seen Trump’s gold encrusted New York apartment, but this guy is in another league entirely. I would sure be interesting to see the public reaction in America if anyone was to build a house this opulent. But given the horrific poverty that is present in India, to build a structure like this as a personal residence does seem to be highly insensitive at best.

I’m as much of a capitalist as anyone and Mr. Ambani can certainly do as he pleases with all that dough, but I do think an awareness of the fate of those around him should play into his actions.

Really will having a house this spectacular give him a better life; or will the separation it creates from virtually everyone else around him make it a regretful nightmare?

Mr. Ambani, with all due respect, you are going to be labeled as the dumbest richest person in our century. How much to you contribute to your fellow Indians? How much donations do you make to infants? Orphanage? Disabled? Elders? Hospitals? Education? Homeless? Aids? Cancers? HIV? Mr. Ambani, with all due respect, living 10 times higher than those around your neighbors will not make you any BETTER person. You might be living so high, with the characteristics of yours will show of a very…there is not even a word to describe you. Mr. Ambani, I am very proud of you how has managed to become world’s fifth richest man, but act like a man and not like a GOD and SHIVA, because you will lay next to a same person who doesn’t have a roof to sleep under.

Well, thats another 600 people with a job feeding their families. That´s 1 billion back to economy not to count upkeep costs. And that´s just for his home. Not to defend him, I don´t know him, but to put things a little straight.

Just goes to show that no amount of money can buy taste! This house is just plain stupid and ugly and most importantly a total waste of money which could have been spent on better things. What a joke! Are the owners blind? They say it’s all about feng-shui…come on we all know that is just a way for them to try to justify their horrible design and taste. I hope it crashes because it is an eye-sore.

  19. Karthik on May 4th, 2008 6:37 am

I am from India. Mr. Mukesh Ambani is known for his contributions to the Indian economy. Not surprisingly, he has also used the opportunity of constructing this custom home of his, to contribute more. From what I’ve read, apart from the designers from abroad, almost 85% of the material used in every floor of the building is Indian. The building is Vaastu compliant, which is an ancient Indian spiritual way of living, requiring Vaastu consultants. Many Indian industries would have benefited by supplying the original Indian designer wares. The labor and the building machinery was also ordered locally.

Mr. Ambani is known to do things differently in business, starting many new things in this country and creating thousands of jobs. At the personal front, he deserves to own great things. And doing that too in a unique way by giving back to the country is just great thinking.

  20. wo xuexi hanyu on May 4th, 2008 11:15 am

for a billion dollar, the building is disturbingly ugly. i’d rather have a regular-sized home and keep the remaining 1,980 million dollars in a bank account. and besides, let’s look at this objectively, i suppose they are planning on taking all their fortune to heaven, because i cannot and would not possibly imagine what would anyone want 50 billion dollars in a lifetime. Make history! change the world! Don’t just give to the poor!! give production means to the poor! ppl are starving to death! but i would assertively suppose being on a magazine within the top five richest do matter the most.

This house is absurd. Wtf does he need all that space for he is just flaunting his wealth infront of the world and in no way giving back to the economy of his home country.

  25. enzo on May 6th, 2008 8:48 am

its an absurd waste of money, while millions of indians go without food, this ungodly man builds a monster home to hide from the masses,,,one day he will be judged by the almighty and i m afraid that he not will fair well….what a shame!!!

  26. Sunil Kumar on May 6th, 2008 9:30 am

I like the idea of this house and Mr. Mukesh Ambani is one person who has the money, time and nerve to build something like this. We should be happy that this is happening in India.

He has worked hard to get this money….he should decide how to spend it.

As for the many of you who hate wealthy people. How money of you will donate 50 billion if you have that money. I am sure enough is being done by Mr. Mukesh Ambani for the needy.

It just goes to show that everyone who works hard and diligently as Mr. Mukesh Ambani can make it big and own a house like the one he is building.

  27. Global Citizen on May 6th, 2008 7:45 pm

Are the Ambani’s building this huge tower so that they can’t see the Mumbai slums????

Look at Bill Gates and his wife. They have shown how money can be put to help those who are disadvantaged. Warren Buffet followed on.

And yea, the building looks ugly!!!

  28. Lallu Lal on May 7th, 2008 9:59 am

If George Bush would have done the whole machinery would have been out to say that its pumping 2B dollars back into economy and how its going to benefit the whole society. Since it is Mukesh Ambani, he should have thought of the horrific poverty around himself. How does his not building this house affects the poverty situation in India? Why is there an assumption that since he is building this house, he doesn’t donate to charity?
    Double Standards?

  32. Timothy on May 8th, 2008 5:05 pm

Kids!!! Why are we surprised that some Indian business magnate is spending like $ 2 billion to build his own home? Since, when we started expecting the capitalists/businessmen/corporate mafiosies to think about those “disadvantaged” people? What exactly this guy has done? Like all other devious, wicked, uncouth capitalist pigs, this guy is another precedent of greed and vice that comes up with capitalism. Oh and all those wonderful stories about Bill and Warren the philanthropists…heheheh thats for some other day!

  33. JustIndi on May 9th, 2008 6:47 am

Cool it guys! Its his money, he likes it, he thinks he deserves it. So let him enjoy every bit of it. Atleast lets be happy that he is not using tax-payers money to bomb Iraq or afganistan.
I wish he build more such houses/palaces (would you be able to build something like a Taj, Mr. Mukesh or Anil Ambani?). Build more structures that the world would come to envy (maybe like Petronas Towers)…
Poverty? Where does poverty not exist? Is the US/Europe rid of the homeless poor or poverty stricken?
Just keep building more of these Sir.

This is a sheer example of ultimate insanity. He has the money but NO TASTE. Just imagine a “house” with 600 “unfamiliar” faces all around you. His family consists of 4-5 members whereas the number of people that would be staying/ moving inside this house would be 600….REAL CRAZZY…Can’t even imagine this…It WOULD BE LIKE LIVING INSIDE A “MALL” OR A MARKET PLACE , where you don’t know each other. Also, I don’t think this house would cost him $ 2 billions…
Instead he should have used this money for some good cause…

  37. Divyang Patel on May 11th, 2008 12:20 pm

People who have a notion that “India is a Poor Country”, think about it again. This is a classic example of a rising giant, this is India at its best. Mr. Ambani is not cause of shame, but a matter of pride, west has had its days, its time for east to shine. Think about it.

You can see such things happen only in countries like India.Charity is not in their dictionary. He probably bribed all the politicians to get a permission to build it .The rich and the corrupt rule the country.I dont think building high rising towers will make India a super power.

  40. Bobby H. on May 14th, 2008 9:47 pm

Amazing, the ultra rich in the Western world take jobs away from average folks and send them to places like India. That is bad enough if you are suffering from something like this, but then to see that some fool like this gets crazily rich and that the average guy in India is not any better off. What has this man done to earn 50 billion? No one should achieve this, it is obscene. I an no commie, but this is the kind of thing that makes the people mad as hell and revolt–and then they are usualy led like sheep by some despot with promises. Then people like him do not do so well. A real man would live more simpy and try to do good with his money. 2 billion would create one hell of a fundation that would leave a wonderful legacy, vs. a sybol of his greed.

WHAT AN IDIOT! Seriously… Ok I know everyone here has been defending him by talking about how his spending will dump money back in the economy and provide more people with jobs, but SERIOUSLY. It doesn’t work that way. The people around him will still be desperately poor and he will have done nothing to help THEM, who actually NEED IT. Their lives won’t improve one bit. What the hell is this guy’s problem? Seriously. And how would you even live with 27 floors and 5 other people in your family? It’s like living in an airport or a shopping mall. Not to mention, it’s a hideous house. Seriously, man, follow Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. They are a hell of a lot more useful to humanity than you are. FOLLOW THEIR EXAMPLE. What a moron, seriously… I hope you can see not only the Arabian Sea which you so desire to but also the slums and all the poor people around you who you by the way didn’t give a crap about.

  43. Chris on May 18th, 2008 1:52 pm

Why is it the duty of the richest people to always help the poor? why can’t they just enjoy their wealth without some hippies coming out protesting that they don’t help out.

  44. Steve on May 20th, 2008 8:38 am

Because Chris, they made their riches from the back of the poor. Either poorly paid labor, or anything else. Besides, you can never spend that amount of money even in 10 years.

  45. Ahammed on May 24th, 2008 4:06 am

    Dear Readers,
Its easy to say, donate the money to all poor, give it to charity, do this and do that. But the pain can be only felt by the hen which has layed its egg. Mr. Mukesh Ambani, his brother and his respectable father have spent their life in developing the economy so far. How many Indian citizens have got shares in Reliance groups, how many house holds income in based on this. How many business men are gaining interests, dividents and other incomes by selling the company shares when the market goes up and down. its countless. many have earned money. Why dont all of them donate money.??? Its a pride that Mr. Mukesh Ambani is building this Billion dollar home in India. Do you all know. this has changed the total Face of Indian face in the world market. I am from United Kingdom and now in UK, all property investors are arguing that they need to ask investors in india to pump money in to UK for developing their country. Poverty is not created by its own or by nature, its created due to lazyness and immature activities or the civilization. Now its all changing. so stop moaning and appreciate his courage to spend such a huge money. Its going to be a pride like the Mysore Palace, Jaipure palace. Its modern technology. The Building might look Ugly, do you think a person spending $2 Billion dollars to built would have not thought about this. this is the technology and design which would hold the building for a longer time. think in a different directive. So stop blamming others. Have a great day guys.

********All these complainers sound like they are either so JELOUS or so STUPID,,, its like looking back at Shah Jahan and saying he shouldn’t have built the TAJ MAHAL,,, and that he was selfish and stupid in building after-all a tomb, for the love of his life… The Guy has done a great job, and wants to reward himself and his family… let him do so by all means… don’t feel Jealous of him. I can bet if any one of you had the chance you would definitely think of doing something like this for yourself, and besides its going to be a historic building,,, created with top notch modern technology, combined with ancient expertise why would you want to stop someone form creating history,,, if you cant do it…
I understand the frustration about all our jobs (in the US) going to Asia and other places,,, and I ve been a victim of the same… but that’s something our government and people are doing,,, they are betraying their own and literally selling them out… but as you can see now the concept is coming back to bite them on their backs… We cant blame India or China for our own peoples selfishness, self-centeredness and stupidity…INSTEAD WHY DONT WE DO SOMETHING LIKE THE GREAT MAHATMA DID (MAHATMA GANDHI),,, IN NOT BUYING WHAT THE BRITISH WERE TRYING TO FROCE DOWN THEIR THROATS, LIKE IMPORTED clothes AND GOODS FROM ENGLAND, INSTEAD HE BOYCOTED AGAINST THEM, IN A VERY DELEBRATE YET PEACEFUL MANNER, AND MADE HIS PEOPLE SOW THEIR OWN CLOTHES, GROW THEIR OWN CROPS, LIVE SIMPLER BUT MUCH MORE FUILFILLING AND HAPPIER LIVES. We the people need to do something about what is going in this country, and not sit around and wait for the government or the selfishly rich CEO’s to come to our aid,,, coz they never will know what it is to loose a job, or not pay your bills on time, or for that matter feed a family… ONLY we know what that feels like and only we can truly do something about it…. FASTEN YOUR SEAT BELTS FELLOW AMERICANS, GET READY TO FIGHT FOR BASIC RIGHTS…. PEACEFULLY….

This is with reference to Mr. Mukesh Ambani’s 2 billion dollor house. Its so surprising and shocking.Mr. Mukesh should not forget that he came from a middle class family. People know about his father’s economic status before he established Reliance. Though we say india is becoming rich, the average man’s life is not improving. Instead of building such a house, he can invest something in remote villages, where millions of people still live in starvation.Like Bill Gate’s he can help the government to eradicate AIDS in India.

It is his money, let him spend it the way he likes it. I donot think he has any irregularity to his name or any real civil or criminal charge against him. If one feels rules favour the rich and powerful, change the rules. OH! it’s been tried – by the french revolution, by the Bolsevics in Russia and by Mao in China and we know the results. I know I have got at least a rupee from what he earned because he earned it from the Indian economy and I am part of it. If he gave away all his money among the poppulation of the world each would get Rs. 280/. Well if he were to do that, why would he earn the money in the first place? I am happy with my one rupee, that I got from his efforts in pushing the Indian economy up.

CONGRATS,.making a house of this kind , not only requires money but also a huge amount of guts. Mr Ambani has shown that he has both.HATS OFFFFFFF.
AS far as donating or investing issue ,he never said ,he is not going to do after the house is complete.

  52. comment on June 3rd, 2008 2:48 am

Okay, HOW in the WORLD is building a large house immoral? By those standards even having an Internet connection should be considered immoral; don’t you think that $40 a month could better benefit starving people? Ambani didn’t cause the poverty around him, and I happen to know that Ambani has donated WAY more to charity than any of the commenters to this blog ever have!

  53. Karlean Kelly on June 3rd, 2008 2:09 pm

What do you do with a billion dollar house. All this money that you have you can help alot of people that need the help. There are children out there that don’t have food or a roof over there head, and here you are building a billion dollar house that only you or relative are going to live in it.There are plenty of rooms that are not going to be use. Can you imaging how much it is going to cause to clean it. you can build a ccommunity for the poor with that money, I can use a million if you are going to through your money away. I can put it to better use. What in god name were you think.(SHARE THE WEALTH).

  54. Jim on June 4th, 2008 2:19 am

It’s Mr Ambani’s money. If he can afford it, why not build it?
Why dont the critics of the house do something to help the poor and stop nagging. Stop looking at what others does and do your own thing good.
He is spending less than 5 % of his wealth on the house and it will create some income for others. Also he has a lot more money left for charity. Whether he spends the rest of the money on the poor or not, its his money…but….God will judge him in the end.
I do hope he will spend at least a couple of billion more on the poor in India, but it’s his money…not mine.
So stop nagging…It’s not up to us to judge.

It is his money so his choice how he spend it. How you know he didn’t donate anything. If i was a person in need I would rather have a job than some charity form some billionaire. I think he created enough job to reach this height. Everyone has money. it is not that the charity only accept a billion dollar at a time. How much have you donated? My dad was a social worker all his life and I can never be like him but I donate whatever I can rather than crying on the internet and yelling at rich people cause they are not donating. Sounds more like jealousy than anything else.

  59. Bkay on June 15th, 2008 4:39 pm

This is total insanity. Why should a normal person build a 27 story home, having 6 floors of parking? Please give me a good reason for his actions. He can do something better with the money like help build new schools in India, help the poor people afford health care, and so on. Now because of his crippy, selfish little heart, he decides to build a 27 story home. Besides, his business was inherited, he did not toil and work all day like others, he deserves much less. I mean, what honestly is the point of living in a 27 story home with 5 other people. This is absurd, insane, ridiculous, and apalling. Indeed it is hard for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God. I live in USA and to those of you who write saying this man’s action to build such a home has improved India’s image, I strongly disagree. He has simply worsened India’s image because all we can see happening is the cast system. Thank you

  60. chirag on June 25th, 2008 2:18 pm

Are those that r saying Mukesh and Anil Ambani haven’t done anything for the country actually read about them? Or are they making assumptions? This guy is a Multi- Bilionaire….He donates Milliones and MIlliones to poverty, aids, etc etc….He has done a TON for the Indian economy…People need to read and do some research before they start critisizing an individual. Also, yes the house isnt that great from the outside…But have you seen the inside? He has the money so he can spend it.

  61. Christian on June 28th, 2008 9:42 am

Well I think that he has the money to build this “house” and if that’s what he wants to do with his money that is is business. I personally would not choose to build something THIS big for the amount of people that are living there, but I don’t think that people should try to tell him what o do with his money.

  62. Torrence on June 30th, 2008 12:17 am

I find it very interesting that no one has talked about Donald Trump who does essentially the same thing as this man! Also, many people are saying that the money would have been better spent donating to the poor, but really how much would that help? I believe in what the bible says, and Jesus himself said that the poor will always be with you, so no matter how much he does to help, his deeds would only go so far. Therefore, it’s only by God’s kingdom and the promised hope for a new earth will these problems ever be solved, because if anyone is helped they would never escape death and that goes for Mr. Ambani as well. Thus, whether the money was well spent, that’s for Mr. Ambani to decide. Plus who is to say that over time he has not given $3 plus billion to charity. In addition, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are no saints, if they were any better than this man they would not still be among the richest men in the world. Anyone could easily live off $100 million or to go further I think you probably could do anything you wanted to with $10-$20 million. So why don’t we suggest they donate their 40 plus billion, because who needs that much to live comfortably? Believe me I survive on much less!
To sum it all up, one day all of mankind’s injustice and inequality will be done away with. Therefore, in an effort to worry about more important things than materialism I will end my message here.

i think if he invested that money on business he could make more money and make more jobs for thousands of people. i like architecture, but this house doesnt appeal to me at all. anyway, its his right where and how to spend his money though. people like this one are pityful, they cant sleep better at nights worrying

  64. mina on July 4th, 2008 12:18 pm

A billion dollar for a house?!!! I’m not against him or anything but what’s the difference between living in a 200 million house and a Billion dollar house? well i would never know, but it would be a really an interesting question to ask him…
that money can feed off the entire Africa…well from a perspective of an averege citizen ‘WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!!!’ conclusion-it’s his money and he can do whatever he wants with it….

  65. Simon on July 18th, 2008 1:04 am

It’s pathetic! I’m a structural engineer and I would not feel safe in a structure that looked like that. Architecturally its pathetic. But then this is what you get from people with too much money, little imagination and no intelligence.

Warren Buffitt would laugh his head off and he is richer then them both.

  66. darknight on July 19th, 2008 9:12 pm

a billion dollars? that’s very hard to believe….unless every square inch of that house is made in gold…mebbe it’s the land value too…honestly a billion dollars converted into indian rupees…is an ocean of money…you dont need that much to build a house like that…such a waste of money.

but then again, it’s his money…let him enjoy it in peace ppl…why do u care? more than anything he’s helping his neighborhood with more jobs…ever heard of the trickle down theory?

  68. Ahammed on August 2nd, 2008 3:16 am

    Dear Criticizers,

******Before we jump on the Ambani’s billion Dollar house******

Let me ask you all something about yourself. How many of you have built their own house and for how much have you built. Now ask this question to yourself and ask again how much money have “you” spent for charity and towards poor people. Did you consider youself instead of building the house donating the money to poor people or for charity????

First wipe your A** then criticize others.

IF what you did as per your income and your status was right, then Ambani is doing it right as per his income and his status.

As told by my fellow mates, have you ever tried to see how much money reliance group has spent towards charity. They have their own trust for that. They have donated, donating and will donate.

Its been a pride of our country that Ambani has come forward to shine. It will be like the Petronas Tower in malaysia or the Effiel Tower in paris.

    Good Work Ambani.

  69. Jeff on August 13th, 2008 2:30 pm

Morally: I thought to criticize this man. But I have changed my mind. How can I judge him? I don’t know enough about him or this world to be a proper judge. I may well not be morally superior to this man. If I suddenly had all his money, I might make similarly selfish decisions. Certainly, I am selfish with the money I have now. I give out small sums and pat myself on the back as I save much more for myself. I wish I were more generous. Why? I believe what Jesus said, essentially: that a person can either store up riches on earth or store up riches in heaven. No one can keep their earthly riches once they die. Not to mention that those earthly riches can be taken from you or destroyed. However, riches in heaven can never be taken away. I wish I were more generous for selfish reasons. How ironic! If you don’t believe that the measure of a man is how much money he has… then, why would this expression of wealth impress you? Consider for example a hypothetical situation. Your child, whom you love and cherish, is drowning in a pool within easy reach from the side. A very rich person (not this rich man… remember, this is a hypothetical to understand what type of riches are most valuable –nothing else), who is completely capable to help, does not help you child and walks away. A very poor person saves you child. Which person is greater? Obviously, the poor person is greater. It does not matter what the hypothetical rich person has done in his life to earn his wealth, it does not matter where he started or what he overcame to earn the money, no amount of money defends his honor. This is why earthly riches are not very valuable next to heavenly riches.

Economically: The idea that spending this money for himself is in fact generous because people will be employed is sort of silly. If he gave the money away, people would be employed also after the poor who received the money immediately spent it. The difference is to what extent the Indian economy would be developed to produce: (food, health care, basic housing and sanitation, and education) VERSUS the extent that the Indian economy will be developed to produce: (extravagant custom items). Yes due to trickle-down, his expenditures will stimulate the Indian economy to produce both things. The question is to what EXTENT the different sectors of the economy would be developed if the money was donated effectively versus using the trickle down approach. Also, how does the greater development of certain sectors in the economy affect the long range economy of India?

i just have a couple of questions to all the crtics… does anyone ask you how you spend your money?

well he is billionaire great, and you have 1000Rs every month. how much you have been giving to all the causes you are soooo worried about all of a sudden?
yes, it’s easy to judge when it is someone else and someone else’s money…!
why don’t you count the countless things he did or because of his business?
be your own judge b4 judging Ambani or anyone else. and that goes for me too…!
yep we all are guilty….! Peace…!

    Quick Facts

He is actually a trillionaire in indian currency. At current exchange rates he is worth about 2,300,000,000,000 Indian Rupees and his house costs 46,000,000,000 Indian Rupees. That actually makes him a mulit-trillionaire.
The size of India’s economy is about 50,000,000,000,000 Indian Rupees. That means that Mukesh Ambani owns 4.6% of Indias economy. That means that for every 1000 rupees in an Indian’s wallet, Mukesh Ambani owns 46 rupees of it. That also means that his house sucks up 0.1% of India’s economy. That means that for every 1000 rupees in an Indian’s wallet, 1 rupee is somehow associated with Mukesh Ambani’s “residence.” The average Indian makes about 1000 US dollars a year, or about 50,000 Indian rupees a year. It would take an Indian 46,000,000 years to make what Mukesh Ambani has in his bank account.India’s population is at 1,100,000,000. That means Ambani has 46,000,000 people at his whim. With him owning 4.6% of India’s economy, it is like he is the King of India. Or the dictator of India. With him owning that big share of India’s economy, that makes all of India his playground. No one should be that powerful and wealthy except God himself.

  73. gaurav on September 22nd, 2008 10:21 pm

Well, as somebody pointed out Mr Ambani is spending less than 5% of his wealth in building this house. I for sure know several people not so rich (middle class at best) who spend more than 75% of their wealth in building a home. So why criticize Mr Ambani. EVen if he does not directly give anything to charity (which ofcourse is not true), his company has helped indian economy propell forward. Reliance has employed thousands of people. so i guess he is doing much more than all the commentators combined. So stop envying.

nothing special, if i have money than i can built home like that or bigger than him. How bigger? mukesh ji… can`t think about it. No limits of my dreams. Its depend on money NOT on your brain. Never know how many people`s have dreams like you or bigger than you.But they don`t have money because ambani, tata, birla, modi etc. i don`t how many others are there who holding the money of indian peoples like you. This is NOT your money. This is money of those people`s who are working for you 24/7 in the tempreture 55-0 digree. This building (NOT A HOUSE) is not a image of india. INDIA`S image is those peoples who can`t eat three time meal, who don`t have complete clothes on thier bodies, who sleep on sidewalks, under bridges. They need food, clothes and shelters. If you think you are special, no body can make house like that house.Than people who everyday sleeping on sidewalks with empty stomach, they are special like you because YOU can`t do that, day per day, for years, almost whole life. I have lots of things to wright down, but no time, beacause i didn`t make money frome other peoples like you. See you later. Any question email

I agree with you.. no amount of money can buy taste. I am an Indian, and I have to admit that the building is one of the ugliest that I have seen. And with the price tag that I see on it, it just makes it even more so stupid. I dont blame the architect who designed this (he must be out of his mind), but whoever passed the plan for building this house must have had his head up the wrong shaft!!!

So much about Reliance contributing to economy – granted that they have a lot of companies and offer a lot of jobs – but they are ultimately in it for their own benefit. I would rate TATA better in many terms for the contributions that they make to the Indian economy. I recently read a report where Mr. Ratan Tata contributed millions to an university in USA and that was criticized asking him to contribute to the poor in India (this after TATA is known for their humanitarian causes). What these critics did not see was that the contribution was for a scholarship for Indian students on fields of agriculture, energy etc. and Tata hoped that these Indian students will use their knowledge in India which would ultimately benefit the country. A thought of the future, to secure the foundations for our students, to change a world tomorrow by planting the seeds for it today – THAT is much more commendable than this stupid and ugly home!

  78. Arabella on November 17th, 2008 8:30 pm

i agree with those pointing out the fact that he is throwing all of the money he spent on this house/mansion/palace BACK into India’s economy. Isn’t that supposed to be a good thing? I also notice that most of the people supporting mr. ambani are those IN INDIA. so i have listened to all of this, and i believe that by building this house, mr. ambani is infact giving 1+ billion back to the economy, and probably a very good salary to another 600+ people! he and his family get to live comfortably, good for them. he’s the one who made all that money, he’s the one who has handed people jobs, he’s the one who chooses how to spend his money. how is any of this hurting people?

  79. kamat on November 20th, 2008 12:53 pm

Mukesh ambani is doing the right thing by building a billion dollar house after all he has a net worth of 50 billion dollars. he is just spending about 2-3% of his wealth on that house.he has the capacity to build 10 houses like that.if i was in his place then i would have built a 5 billion dollar home.

It must have been a lot of fun planning it and it’s going to be a blast living in it. I am sure that he didn’t aspire to become that wealthy so he could put on a Santa Clauses outfit and hand out presents all day. And as far as charities go…… much of the money donated ever gets to the people that need it? In some cases the charity keeps $.90 of every dollar contribution. In closing……….how much do you do to help the less fortunate?

    my dear people of india!
its shame on your part, and shame to our country the way u ppl r thinking negatively! and the most stupidly! all your minds has gone to dogs, because of your own experiences in life. please come out of your world and think……………….

dhirubhai is one of the pillars for india and economy. Today we are here economically, just because of our corporates. And its cheap and worst if pass negative comments soon after seeing their wealth. Every corporate is doing charity to their satisfaction, but not to your satisfaction, wch is undefined.

The great man dhirubhai said few words, wch i given below to motivate/convince u, r enough to script our own lives……………….

“Think big, think fast, think ahead. Ideas are no one’s monopoly”

“Our dreams have to be bigger. Our ambitions higher. Our commitment deeper. And our efforts greater. This is my dream for Reliance and for India.”

Today lakhs of people are living on reliance. Our country directly depending on corporates, in the way of taxes. We would hav been in No 1 economical position today, If we had moderately reasonable politicians/parties. Just because of politics Tata exited from Westbengal, Wolkswagen from Andhrapradesh etc. etc….. IF we have any feelings towards our country, come and join hands in reconstruction of india. ……. again……….. bye…

btw do you know ratan tata, owner of tata group spends 97% of his income in global charity?? if he stops doing that, with 83 global brands under his kitty, he is worth almost 90 billion dollars. yes, by far the richest man ever on earth. that s the reason you dont see him in worlds richest list, and so does founder of infosys and wipro. (they also contribute real huge percentage of their income to charity) if these three would have done what the american billionaires do (ie, contribute less towards charity) SEVEN FROM TOP TEN BILLIONNAIRES WOULD BE INDIANS

as of now four out of top ten are Indians. its just said that the economist are not sure who will be super power of the world, it could be india or it could be china, if you see the richest list, the answer is clear, its India, time for all of us to pack our bags and go there

Hafeez Contractor the premier architect and modern designer of the country says – “This is a right way to build a private house in a congested city. A man like him in any other city would have 10 to 15 acres of land to himself. In a congested city, he wants to go high up and enjoy the view; the whole city becomes his open space”. As Contractor himself explains – the entire project is a very logical and practical project. Would you have rather acres being taken for a house or something that goes upwards and saves ground space?

the house is ok inside…. doesn’t look like a billion dollar house to me….i think it’s a stupid investment…. i mean, if he had to sell it, who in their right mind would purchase a 1 billion dollar house in India, of all places??? no disrespect to the Indians, but there’s no way i would spend even a million dollars on property there…….

  117. Mahesh on January 6th, 2010 5:37 am

I believe that if he has decided to spend this much of money he could have built a structure that the world looks in to that lasts for generations to come. This building worth not more than a shopping mall.

  118. MHASANAT on January 26th, 2010 10:58 am

    Dear All,
Some of you are really out of mind dude. Y do u want to get a better job in life, y do you want to make money?? If you having so much problem then y dont u all sell ur computer and shit nd still living in some village near the boarder.. would u do that ?? huh?? So stop judging others and mind your own business. The amount of luxury you want in life depends on where u r now.. some might think owing a plasma tv as luxury others might think of something else. He his helping Iindia’s economy and employeed more than thousands. Action speaks more than world. Do something instead of just sitting and writting all this stupid slit.. Go and work man!!

  119. mike on February 7th, 2010 2:14 am

Way to go mukesh.. I am happy that u r havig the world’s expensive house.. I bet one day it will nominate with taj mahel.. stupid people say that why doesn’t he spend money for poor people..? He might be donating money ,but he doesn’t want to show off.that’s his money and who the hell are we judging or talking about his business. F****** look at your face in the mirror and think about your self that how much money have u donated in your whole life. It’s hard to give it to someone for us or either him.. so just leave him alone and thanks to him and his dad that we are f****** little famous because of them..People respect to india… No bullshitt up here plz.. I know those poor people and we always seen them too that they don’t try to save money , they don’t like to work. what amount of money they make they spend on alcohol and stuff. those are slums because they like to be slum. If they get money from charities, they will stop working and doing nothing just enjoying hose free money…. Don’t blame on rich people, if they are rich then they will had hard time to become a rich…I would say all who have commented up here they might make 10,000 to 70,000 rs a month i guess, so if you have worry about poor people then let’s do donate money 500 rs a month. don’t just fuck around everyone love their own money.. Sorry if i have said wrong but….let’s do our own.. have a good time ppl..

  120. Sam on February 21st, 2010 10:32 am

That is His money and he can do whatever he wants to do with that. He must be donating to poor, orphanages, hospitals, nobody knows. He worked hard ( his dad too ) and he is repeaing benefit of that. It is very simple.

I do not understand why people are even commenting here, are they giving excuses not to have lot of money to avoid such things. People wake up, what you would do if you have that much money, I am sure that point you even would not think about helping poor and all.

  121. keter on March 10th, 2010 5:46 pm

  125. Tara on March 16th, 2010 11:15 am

Seriously people, get a grip. He’s made money, the hard way, by working for it, and he’s ultimately proud of his wealth.

-His taste sucks, but that’s a matter of opinion
-He’s building this mansion amidst all the slums in Bombay
-He’s wealthy and showing it off – why not, I would
-He’s creating jobs for builders of the mansion and for the 600 people who will work there later on, just dumping back into the economy

-He’s greedy, sh*t, its his money, how many of you donate your salary to charity?
-He acquired his money illegally, he and his father have worked hard for what they have today.

    A couple other points:
-China spent a grip of money on the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympics, are they still getting ROI from that?
-Think about what you would do if you had that kind of money? Donate it? Use it for charitable causes? We all ask what rich people do for others, middle class, what the F do you do for charity?

  129. mailka on April 1st, 2010 8:39 pm

mr.ambani i have great respect for u but instead of building a huge house for ur self u can help the poor people who stay on the roads ,who dont have any food and no shelter.if donate some amount of money to the slums the people living there would be heped and u and ur family will be their helping hands.

  130. Nitin on April 14th, 2010 3:33 am

Im not trying to defend or backfire anyone here, but let me put some light on the topic and allegations on Mr Ambani.
    - Talking about charity first Mrs Ambani runs a NGO which provides basic needs to more than 1500 kids and Sachin Tendulkar is also part of it as he takes care of 200 kids(food, clothing and education till 10th)
    - About the house, some are intelligent enough to understand that in his house there will be 600 ppl employed on a PERMANENT basis.
    - Well cannot comment on the taste he’s got, but all i can say is Prince of Dubai has appreciated the way his house looks, not to mention Prince of Dubai is the man behind the great Burj Al Arab only 7star Hotel.
    - Finally, it is easy to say donate the money and give to the poor but Mr Ambani was also poor he and his son Mukesh worked hard to build this wealth, anybody will think twice in just handing away the hard earned money to someone who is ready to take it but dont want to earn it.
One of my friend say: Its not your fault if you were born poor but, its only your fault if you die poor.

  131. Valsa Peter on April 29th, 2010 1:02 pm

Mukesh must have taken sufficient precautions for security affairs as well. His 27 storey house can be a good target for terrorists for 9/11model attack with aircrafts as missiles.

  132. honey on May 2nd, 2010 12:25 pm

he is doin wat he wants and he is also donating many things, and this house in all over the world would be the wonder which is building in india, which makes me proud so i dont think that this house is only of mukesh ambani it ll b ours, lol….
ya v neva get the chance to get in it but still feel….

  133. Mike on May 6th, 2010 9:04 am

Well i would assume that he is helping his fellow countrymen. And really how can you say bad things about this. Wait i know, anybody that isn’t rich automatically resents th rich especially when they use their money. For example say you live paycheck to paycheck then your neighbor buy a new car, nothing luxurious just new, you still resent him or her for that don’t you.

  134. sathvik on May 29th, 2010 8:05 am

you are very lucky to have a 2 billion doller house i wish i lived in it winth you:).

  135. falsifiability on June 7th, 2010 10:11 pm

the place cannot be judged by just this pic alone. seeing is believing. Im sure the completed place will look much much better.
from initial inspection the pics look tacky and gaudy befitting a tasteless middle east sheikh than an Indian millionaire.
having said this, its his choice his money and his life.
get over it guys and stop giving him advice on homeless and starving and poor.
he donates millions to charity and doesnt need publicity or conduct certificate from internet forums to prove his worth.
we have all rights to criticise the house as garish or tasteless but we have no rights to decide what he does with his money.

  137. D-Man on August 12th, 2010 4:51 pm

Sunil – what are you talking about? Are you saying Mukesh Ambani worked hard for his wealth? What are you smoking? Unless being born in the “right” family is considered hard work – I don’t think you can say Mukesh Ambani worked hard for his money. His father, Dhirubhai – yes, but not Mukesh or Anil. I’m not saying that they are not hard working or intelligent, but the only reason they have all this money is because they had the good fortune of being born to Dhirubhai Ambani.

While the Ambanis are good business people – nobody would accuse them of being good people. Dhirubhai was a “ends justify the means” type of businessman. He bribed, threatened and did whatever he had to in order to build his business – and he never back to society at all. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Rich – yes, but good human beings – no.

  138. James George on August 28th, 2010 6:38 pm

    Lot of interesting comments!

    My two cents

    1. Ambani brothers have more than doubled the initial fortune, they inherited from their father.

    2. The architects n design group were Chinese (Or was it Chinese inspired -wink), also designed several Oriental and Mandarin themed hotels n fashionable outlets in various cities of USA. If you find the design ugly, blame the Chinese. And if u think 1 or 2 billion dollars for a home is expensive, guess how many architects, planners and designers across the world get a fat portion of it?
The final designs are not on show and like most architectural showpieces never revealed until constructed. Watching too much of Discovery n NGC n everyone here thinks they know what the final structure will look like?? You may be surprised that it doesn’t.

    3. If an American or Chinese or Middle Eastern Sheikh does this, reams will be written and lapped up by the world press.
I have seen absolutely bizarre, revolting, disgusting and atrocious residences n towers across the world being passed off as ‘modern art’ in Europe/USA, ‘Experimental’ in Japan, France, Sweden, ‘symbols of a nation’ in China, South East Asia, ‘expression of modernity’ in Australia n Latin America.
If an Indian does it, how dare he do it? How is it possible? Aren’t all Indians supposed to be poor and beggarly? If an Indian is rich, how dare he surpass an American, Chinese or a British tycoon…
I smell racism tinged with jealousy and envy.

    4. India was more richer than half of the countries in the world before the British colonised it, systematically plundered it and left it a penniless nation.
Nation building brought in benefits to many first starters like the TATAS who have a long heritage. Reliance came in much later.Whether you love them or hate them, they dug their heels in and fought oppressive license policies of the closed economy that was India till the 90′s. They also benefitted frm it. With liberalisation, they learnt and fought with the world’s best and deserve their rightful due.

    5. Building a house is a man’s personal choice and he has the freedom to exercise it. There are millions who have a personal choice to save their daily income even if it is meagre, but they choose to spend all of it on liquor, women, jewellery rather than educating their kids or learning a new skill/trade or better farming practices. By doing so they exercise their right to be poor.
If you don’t like your life, you have the power to change it, one step at a time.

    6. A man who owns 50 billion dollars heads hundreds of companies, jet sets hundreds of times in a week, sits n dines with world leaders, presidents and the most influential people in the world. He has hundreds of CEOs, management staff, guests at any given time and has a thousand things to attend to.
He loses money based on the time he wastes each second. He is a genius and so his integrated tower is a guest house, family home, business den, entertainment zone, party center, office suite, media center, transport hub all rolled into one. By doing so, he has reduced his time wasted in commuting to and fro from home to office to hotel to client visits.
If he earns so much per second, he will easily recover the money he spent as an investment in this house.

    7. Charity is a person’s choice. The Bible says “Let not your left hand know what the right hand gives”
The Bill Gates, Rockefellers and Rothschilds can give all they want and earn billions more as goodwill and publicity in front of the media.
People like Ratan Tata give 97% of their monthly salary and the world media will not put them on TIME.
Pretty much the same way Mahatma Gandhi was never given a Nobel. However Barack Obama was given one and so did many American presidents for their ‘amazing and unsurpassed achievements in non violence n world peace’. Go figure!
When the world itself has double standards with regards to who embodies charity and peace, why do you expect them to stand up and applaud for an Indian when it comes to wealth creation for himself, his corporation, his shareholders and his country?
Isn’t wealth creation supposed to be the sole domain of the Americans, British or the Europeans?
After plundering and colonising 2/3rds of the world from Latin America to Africa to Asia and South East Asia, shouldn’t the rich brown Indian man now share the white man’s burden and offload his riches to wash away their moral guilt?
Since the civilised world now can’t stomach the recession in USA and Europe and the emergence of India,China, Brazil and other developing countries into superpowers, are they reaping what they sowed hundreds of years back?

Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani, I’m proud of you. Proud to be an Indian. Proud to have got the opportunity to have met you and worked under you. You taught all of us to be better humans.
I pray that God will give me the same wisdom to manage my finances and to give to charity discreetly the way you have done.

  139. Subbiah on October 13th, 2010 1:23 am

Guys, what nonsense are you talking about giving to Charity/ poor etc…

no one here has said how much percentage of their income they give to charity.

And why do u always pick on a person who has earned it. Why dont u pull up a politician or a drug lord for the wealth they have. Or alteast a Sheikh who has a solid silver audi

This guy has earned it, paid his taxes (u think the tax department will keep quite when a person is spending so much) given to charity and then spent on himself and his family.

u might not like it but He is showing to the world what Indians are capable of. Hell the worlds most expensive marriage happened in India, and today we are showing we have more class.

  140. Megan of Sydney Australia on October 14th, 2010 7:17 am

The place just looks like an expensive slum house to me. And the interiors are hideously overdone with far too much gilt, gold and crystal. Why do people of extreme wealth leave their taste at the door when it comes to their homes? There are many beautiful buildings in India. This just isn’t one of them.

Yes and by the way, 600 jobs in a country teeming with millions of poverty-stricken people is just not that much of a contribution to India’s participation rate. And jobs at doing what? Fawning over a family of six day after day. I’m also sure that the world can do a lot better with entrepreneurs who make intelligent contributions to a country’s economy in ways that make a real difference to many more people both in terms of meaningful work and quality of life.

As my wise father Norman Beecher said, “The ‘wanter’ is never filled”.

  146. Subhadip on October 16th, 2010 1:43 pm

Well… to all you people cursing Mr Mukesh Ambani… it makes me feel that you guys are jealous of his wealth and his achievements. To me its his money, he chooses to do whatever he wants. Guys stop complaining!!! and the people who talks about donating money to charity…. I would like to ask how much percentage of their income do they really donate to charity?? :) :) Also this concept of charity is somewhat like misleading, for me this world would be a much better place if people stops expecting charities from others in general and start believing on themselves and their abilities. Look at yourself people before pointing at others. Lets face the truth…. it is to his credit that he is smart and has earned such amount of wealth, and it is to our discredit that we cannot even think what he thinks possible.
Atleast he is not manufacturing killing machines like B2 bomber for a whopping $ 2 Billion USD each and then rage war for in the name of patriotism. Also as a matter of fact…. a survey showed that the total yearly budget of US army can feed the entire world population for 30 days (3 times each day).
The new fighter jet built by US (F-35) is a total investment of $ 200 Billion USD. Can you justify this expenditure??? Is it really for protecting your country?? Or Invading another country for securing OIL? Why not donating to charity with all these money?
I very much agree with James George’s comment.
If some billionaire builds such a house in the first world countries, it would be an achievement as far as the media is concerned.
For me Mukesh Ambani has done in 21st century what probably Shah Jahan did back in 17th or 18th century by building Taj Mahal.
The entire economical pendulum is shifting with countries like China and India getting richer, while in the next 30-50 years US and other European countries will not be in such good economical condition as they are today. THE WATER IS FLOWING… STOP IT IF YOU CAN.

offshore USofA, and re-aim their Kuran-led hateism via a jet or two it’s way. It’s always about money and religion, anyhoo.

Sure it is his money. But with that much money, maybe he can look around him a little and have some humanity. India has worse infant nutrition and mortality than many sub-Saharan African countries !! So much for an Asian tiger and all the riches that India says it is creating. It cannot feed its own people. You would think with all these billionaires in India, some would actually be more active in Philanthropy.
Mr Ambani is really not much of a giver, and considering his wealth and what is around him, I would hope someday he would see his fortune can also be used to help others, not just himself.
Also, his place is really ugly from a personal opinion.

  151. ak on October 17th, 2010 7:27 pm

Mr Amani maybe with the $50 billion you have a little could be used for this ? ? :::

‘India contributes to about 5.6 million child deaths every year, more than half the world’s total. Half of children in India are underweight, one of the highest rates in the world and nearly double the rate of Sub-Saharan Africa.’

So much for a rich and growing India.

Sure it is nice to be rich, but when the above on your doorstep, someone like him to do a lot to help out. Mr Amani is not much of a giver and this ludicrous ugly house adds to this sick predicament that India has.

there are poor people in india i agree but if someone dont want to work n remain poor for life time nobody can help dem…there are NGOs and many govermental scheme to help them …but if some middleman eats away the money why shouls ambani like people contribute everytime?

  162. Wise Man on October 31st, 2010 7:18 pm

There is an old Malayalam saying, “Thoorathavan tooriyaal theettum kondu aarattum” (Man who has never shat in his life, the first moment he shits, he will dance with shit), which should explain the ugliness of his creation.

Ugliness aside, why would he need 168 “Imported” cars for 6 people averaging 28 cars per head ? Then he has a full blown auto service center on 7th floor. I suppose all the 168 cars would not be broken down second hand cars but brand new, which would be under full warranty for say 5 years. Then – First, what is the likelihood of the “Imported” brand new car needing repairs ? Second, wouldn’t the warranty be void, when his in-house service folks meddle with the repairs ? Third, How many miles would be put on each of the cars, given that his wife has been just gifted with a brand new jet ? Fourth, Aren’t they likely to fly out of the helipad to the airport and fly around ?

I am sure the Ambanis are hearing and reading – how UGLY their dream house is in public opinion. I think that in itself is a god sent punishment – for this vulgar display of wealth. Reminds me of the famous “Sword of Damocles” in a way.

He has done a great deal for India… he has built (or expanded) the empire providing jobs to lakhs of Indians. If he is creative enough to earn wealth for his company , what is the form in building and maintaining a house that he wants.
Look at this way, this house is now feeding 600 people… Jai Ho Mukesh…

Money can’t buy taste I guess. What an ugly home. I find it funny that some of the Indian posters are proud of this guy and think his creation shows how India is rising. If this is the way India is investing its wealth then Indians should be worried. Imagine Warren Buffet erecting such a structure in an American ghetto the way Mukesh built this overlooking a slum: people wouldn’t be proud, they would wonder if he was experiencing some form of senility.

For a billion dollars you would have thought it would really “WOW!” you in terms of a first impression, but this abomination has got to be architecturally speaking, the ugliest “house” I have ever seen! Just hideous! Obviously, one might have vast resources and money but it certainly does not imply good taste. My suggestion, begin tearing it down floor by floor and donate it to help others less “fortunate” in your country and thereby discover philanthropy.

Well i hope Mr. Ambani u r not disappointed with the OUTER design of your huge house…….m bit disappointed sir.

  169. Joe Cass on November 5th, 2010 3:15 pm

He built his castle with a bird’s eye view over the slums of Mumbai, the ramshackle homes that are, at this moment, being torn asunder by the Indian authorities. Good move, sir. I only wish the worst.

It just goes to show that money can’t buy good taste. Why could he not build something beautiful like the Taj Mahal instead of the ugliest building the world has ever seen? That kind of money could have bought a tropical island with a nice view instead of overlooking slums. Yuck!

Ummm.. creating jobs and dumping the money into the economy? what a joke that is, nothing personal, I see people speaking that way lately, due to a ‘crummy’ economy, but what the hell do I really know about the economy? other than I’m most likely a better tipper than rich people, as well, I’ve heard that thru my years of growing up, directly from friends catering to rich a holes, currently, even a friend works at a golf course in TN, USA and has mentioned some billionairre who gives him a freakin dollar where anyone else would give at least $10 .. I’m curious what this guy is going to do about security .. the poor people are going to resent it, and that is typical of people these days, gluttonous as can be.. with such a huge home, he could put the billion dollars back into the market by giving 999 million dollars away to care for the fellow human beings around him who are currently starving to death, and not because they’re lazy, but because they’ve gotten screwed by some other human being who is insecure and selfish … feed the people .. this makes me sick, but then again so does the fact so many peolpe in the world have so much money and they’re so cheap and insecure, they’ve got to buy a mercedes SUV and then drive like a holes and have no respect for people riding bicycles as their main means of transportation .. good luck , mirror guy, talk about vanity, that is the epitomy .. regardless, life is great .. i wonder if some suicide bomber is going to try and level this guy’s billion dollar insecurity blanket ..

    I don’t know if this is a joke…..

Life in the World’s Costliest Mansion::

Mukesh gets up from his bed room on 15th floor, takes a swim in the pool on 17th floor, has breakfast on the 19th floor, dresses up for office on 14th floor, collects his files and office bag from his personal office on 21st floor, wishes bye to Nitaben on 16th floor, says ‘See You’ to his children on 13th floor, and goes down on 3rd floor to the parking bay. Since it is Wednesday, he wants to self drive his 2.5 Crore Mercedes to office. Just then he finds out that he has forgotten the car keys upstairs. But on which floor? 15th, 17th,19th,14th,21st,16th or 13th ?His IIM qualified GM raises alarm in internal security system and phones all his servants, cooks, maids, secretaries, pool attendants, gym trainers, etc. On all the floors. There is a hectic search and lot of running about on all the floors, but the key is not traceable. Fed up, after half an hour, Mukeshbhai leaves in a chauffeur driven ordinary car. This is seen as a serious lapse in management of the residential facility. It is noted that each key now must have ID tag and all gates should monitor movement of keys. The GM runs the schedule of Mukeshbhai on his Palmtop and finds that Bhai had last driven the car on Saturday. At 3.30 P.M. Late in the afternoon, it is discovered that 4 days earlier, a temporary replacement maid had washed Mukeshbhai’s pant and hung it to dry on a string in the balcony of 16th floor, with car keys in the pant pocket. The key had blown away somewhere in the high winds at 16th floor level and was never found. The maid was afraid to report. This had happened, only because Nitaben was away for the ‘Mumbai Indians’ Match in Chennai. Otherwise Nitaben has habit of checking clothes given for washing personally. After 3 days Nitaben asked Mukeshbhai as to where was he roaming till 3 A.M. Early morning ? Mukeshbhai said, ‘I was very much at home all night.”Then why did the helicopter land on the terrace at 3 A.M, I was so worried., I could not sleep the whole night’, said Nitabhabhi.’Oh ! That helicopter? That helicopter came from Germany, sent by Mercedes people to install new lock on the car. I had to get up and accept the keys personally, for security reasons. I could not sleep after that.”why did you not come to me?”I Was too tired to check up, which floor you were using today.

The structure, opulent as he wants it to project, looks like put together junk.

I won’t be surprised if it ever collapses.

    No uniformity, no design flow.

It’s slum inspired and thus it should fit just fine along with the other slum houses around it.

(No matter how much you dress yourself up, if you were cr*p, you still are.)

You don’t seem to understand how money works!
If he spends $1B in India it goes to the Indian economy and othet people will benefit from it. If he simply puts in Swiss bank, only Swiss will benefit from it.

So, I would like all Billionars to spend most of their money so that masses will benefit from tricke down economics.

I dont understand why people has to criticise , he is atleast not like those corrupt polictitian whose money is there in swiss bank and still no one can do anything about it, so please stop bitch infact being jealous of his richness. People talk about charity i think there are lot rich indians ans if every one could contrbute even 100 rs it will make a tremandeous change or else u can say a shift in the econony , Here in this blog i was sad to see people criticising infact by making his house he has put back the same money into the indian economy only not only that 600 jobs +things which will be required in his house on daily basis and so on………. so i think Honarable Mukest Ambani has put India on the top and once again one more history in india . some say he could spend that money for the good of the poor. but hey common how many of us do that in our lives? the world is always like that; you do live different than the poor once you get rich.

BUT!!!! he has shown his bad taste, the place looks like “i dont know… some junk place”

  193. Lynn on November 29th, 2010 8:19 am

    Hello fellow writers above,

Every one who blames Mukesh Ambani, please remember one thing. Its his right to live as he wants…!!!!!!! He is not supposed to live humble since there are lot of poor people in India. Its his right as a human being to live as he wish..!!!! none of u be jelouse of him…!!!!!!!

I wish to remind one more thing……. ” POOR DON’T NEED THE USELESS SYMPATHY BUT THEY NEED INSPIRATION ” Thinks if you can inspire at least one instead of cursing some one else..!!!!!!

    May god make many Mukeshs….!!!!!!!!

    All the best…!!!!!!
    God Bless

    Dear Mr. Ambani-

Last month I went to a charity lunch at a library in Seattle WA. An Indian women cooks lunch for one hundred people every month in her little kitchen and takes it to the library, all Americans comes to this lunch they bring school backpacks and school shoes and eat lunch. She has collected many shoes and schoolbackpacks for the poor children in her country by cooking all night the night before. I was wondering if you can donate a pair of shoes or a school backpack to her for the under-privilege children.

Some of the European palaces have been built on slavery, and looting the world. So are some of the estates in the Americas (Tobacco, cotton, drugs, wall street, arms and weapons dealing) . None say anything.
Why is that when an Indian guy makes money legally, people say bad things. Is it jealousy or envy? Whatever it is, it is one of the 7 deadly sins….

  205. REMO on January 12th, 2011 5:27 pm

    HI Ambani,
good to see this house well built without any attractive outlook “50 billion”.
thats ok, you can built another one if you dont like this.
I agree with everyone here, yes too lavish spending…yes feeding another 600 families….can’t say anything…
lot of people talking about donating to charity, themselves not spend a $1 for chartiy… as a matter of fact, its his money…he got a choice to drop it in ocean, or built a heaven or make poor to rich…

  207. rjev on February 5th, 2011 1:57 pm

Some of you people are just hopeless dipshits. Maybe it’s a cultural thing that I just don’t understand, but why should he have to throw billions in handouts at unfortunates? The fact that he has created jobs and industry in his own backyard isn’t enough? What’s more, how do you know he isn’t doing this already? It makes sense, charitable donations are tax-deductible. He probably donates vast sums of money to all sorts of charities. But the bottom line is this: his money is not public domain, and nobody’s entitled to his money but him.

This is really a horrible and agreed with many people, this is just insensible act. why not this indian learn from bill gates, buffet other guys who spending their money for great great deeds. why they forget their surrounding people sometime don’t eat before bed, so many people don’t have a single room so they sleep on the road. people are dying just because they cannot avail even poor quality of treatment. I never heard Indian big shots are spending money for good causes, there would be some people, its quite hard to hear about them. Why we are so insensible. If God has given you more than others, you have responsibility to help who is really needy.

  214. Bryce on March 9th, 2011 9:08 pm

Someone said he will be adding that money “back into the economy” and providing 600 jobs. Thats not really how it works. Its not really his money. You can’t have that much wealth without having gotten it dishonestly. That money represents capital, pretty much anything that has economic value and because he holds it others don’t have it. A billion dollars could create a lot more than 600 jobs.

    Scrambled thoughts:

This would be nice, With that much money to burn it would be possible to setup a place to worship the God that created the universe in Gen 1, Some educational institutions which could include the latest in High-Technology laboratories, and production facilities all the way down to the basics of reading / writing and mathematics to build an empire of the quality of japan and start a technology centered base of companies all out of India and pumping residents of india into your doors. That would cause native residents to be able to produce goods and become a high-impact to the world. Let’s see the next iPhone 1 sized innovation manifest from that. Something so accomplishing that the general public looks and says WOW. ( Is it even about materialism in the first place? Then again 168 cars and a billion dollar house would probably state that it is…) — wouldn’t that be random to just see a rich place in india? 600 full time Employees is not a bad start at all, why not pay them $30 a day and have someone teach them what to do in order to be productive with it throughout the community. ( Your risk of being targeted by some cracked up bloke will likely only go down. You could also crack the Jealousy whip, so be careful not to do that. ) ^_^

It is clear he delivers much more than many people who’d come and stay in a hotel and leave. Therefore he is living in an hotel that is ultra luxury. And what is this thing about first giving to poor and not enjoying his efforts and is life. The poor are poor because they dont want to be rich. And therefore you guys want the rich to make poor rich by donating their money.

Oh! You must be communists. Anyway, its nice to give and I am hopeful he and his family would have already. But that is his pure choice. One may choose to not donate money but donate opportunity to make money by working hard (and his companies probably do that already).

I especially feel the essence of jealousy. But you must not compare yourself to Ambani. That is illitracy of yours. If you want to believe in yourself as his father did, get up and work on Sundays, stop watching TV and goofing your time, Work till late night and reach your work early morning, give your life up for something greater – creating; and have the cunning and smarts to go ahead and reach the top by creating great products – finally when you are old enough and have children, one day they too will have this opportunity,

So it depends on you. Stop goofing. Start working.

  232. Vickram Medirata on May 29th, 2011 4:47 am

@ Rajan Sharma “If ambani had donated even half of the money to charity , he would be considered a god”

NO RAJAN, He’d be considered a fool by those getting his money.

  233. Vickram Medirata on May 29th, 2011 4:48 am

And for anyone ‘the one that gives money’ is a God, is the Fool himself. What a fool! to compare a man giving away money to God. If tomorrow Satan gives money to you, you’ll probably confuse him with god and start praying. Dick.

  239. Curious on June 30th, 2011 10:23 am

    just curious …
but would you think along with me.

    - How much money do you earn. No need to tell me but tell urself.
Lets say its 1000 Rs a month.
    - How much of that you donate to others, who dont earn even 2 Rs a month?
    - How BAD do u feel, when you might hv 5 rs to spare or 10 Rs to spare or 800 but you know someone is going to sleep empty stomach tonight or next night
    - How much you spend on your living from that 1000 Rs?
    - How much more you want to earn, to give yourself better life. You want to fight to earn to succeed for your self and your children (they hv better future)?
    - Are you ashamed of fighting? and earning more?
    - Maybe 2 billion is much less than his charity or infrastructure and economy contribution. Maybe it is INDEED the 10% or so that everyone gives to charity or trie to give to charity. What he is spending on his home is certainly much less than 40-80% of our earning that we spend on our living !!! Think abt that.

Also, unless you are ABLE, you can NOT help anyone else.
Im sure MONEY is earned on the back of POOR, but you think he would rather (or capitalists) would rather not EXIST? or work hard to WIN ? to earn medals and whatever REWARDS life and planet gives them?

Now responsibility to others – sure that is as highest VALUE as can be.
Can we really judge that just one building and 3 billion dollor fact?
Maybe we need more facts?? dont we?

So you would rather earn 1000 and give away 500 (50%), then earn 1 million and spend 10% of that to enable 100s of ppl getting ability to earn 500 today and who knows, more and more tomorrow.
This is capitalism, its evil, but the only thing that works …

Set the common & fair rules for all men and then dont regret if some one Succeeds and enjoys his success.
I would adore if the successful is humble and helps “teach others to fish too”
Who would you have teach to fish, the guy who hasn’t fished ever?
Would you rather have unskilled doctor to operate on you, just because he is a NICE and POOR person who needs the money to live? Or not trained SOLDIER defending us?

  240. John Morton on July 5th, 2011 3:17 am

What a bunch of whiners. First of all, I think the building is absolutely gorgeous. Look at all that open garden space. Any garden high in the sky is beautiful to me and this guy took that concept and not only made it real – he put the gardens on almost ten floors! Yes, he spent $2 billion on a house… but over 80% of all the materials used to build his house is local. 100% of the labor built is local. Of the $2B spent, over 90% of that went directly to the people of his country. The guy literally funded the entire local economy for several months – ALL ALONE.

And to all those people saying he doesn’t need all that space…. Ummmm, no of course he doesn’t need all that space… but he is still employing 600 local people to keep it well maintained and humming along. That’s a lot of permanent jobs for one building – MUCH more than a similarly sized hotel would employ.

As far as I’m concerned, there are a million other ways he could have spent the $2 billion that would have benefited his local people much less. Like all the wealthy people in America that just hoard money, give it to the banks where it grows and the bank then turns around and makes a huge profit on it… banks that are likely in other countries.

You guys are all a bunch of little cry babies. My hats off to a killer project and a good man.

  241. Vijay on July 6th, 2011 6:54 pm

Horrible building absolutely ugly, and why would you want to build a billion dollar house in a shit hole like mumbai!!!! I personally would have built it somewhere like Goa if he really wanted to stay in India.

  242. to you bunch of suckers! on July 7th, 2011 7:26 am

What is wrong with you people? Why cant we get it in our heads that a rich person can spend his hard earned money, however he wants! When Mukesh Ambani builds a billion dollar house, people are debating about it, raising questions, asking how many ‘poor people’ he could ‘feed’ with that money. I know i am taking out a long gone, more-than-enough debated topic, but it is just an example.

Why in hell should they just give off their money, instead of building a house that they like. Why do we have it in our heads that the rich people owes the rest something. All we are, are filthy hypocrites, who talk of giving away billions, when u wouldn’t full heartedly give away a hundred rupees!

What extra obligation do they have to the society than each one of us? They are people who have worked hard, and made it out of one of the most corrupt country in the world. These people have done more for the Indian Economy than more than 90% of the people in our country can dream of. So why cant we allow them to spend some of it in peace? Why do they have to think about what the poor will think of their home? Do you take opinion on how to build you house or do anything personal from complete strangers or anyone poor?

So what do people expect rich people like Mukesh Ambani to do? Divide his 27 billion dollars fortune between 1.2 billion people in India? Okay, so lets talk about that. Dividing that would give around, 22.5 dollar for each person in India. How much help would that be?

What he is doing, or any rich industrialist, is doing,is much more nobler than just giving away money. He has a vast chain of industries which is providing jobs to thousands of people, and therefore, a living to thousands of families. Now whatever his selfish motives be, does it matter? He is providing jobs, to those who deserve it, and paying a hell lot of taxes to the government. He might be doing more than any charity foundation in India must have done for its people!

What you people need to do is read the old Chinese folk tale of the fishermen brothers. A beggar comes to their house, and the first brother gives him some fish to eat. The next day the same beggar comes again, but this time the second brother takes him out and teaches him how to fish, and then he doesn’t have to beg again and makes a fortune. Just giving away money is not a solution to anything! Giving people the opportunity to make some, is what he is doing!

What we need to do is, get it in our brains, that ‘NO ONE OWES YOU ANYTHING!’,.

Everything is fine, whatever he is doing is doing for good. Many of us are affected by his services daily . wheather its mobile , oil, petrol, food etc. I guess we all should be thankfull to his family.

But one thing i didnt liked abt him or any big industrialist is corruption.

Have lots and lots of money and still increasing corruption is like a grease spot on your white shirt.

Why is that he has been given Rs 500 cr land in just 27 cr … Thats not a gift from govnt. Placing such example in front of general masses is not goos at all.
He should have contributed to stop corruption instead of increasing it just to have an benefit of 400cr which too much for us but not for him.

Its like you have thousand rupees and you bri be someone rs 2 to save your rs5.

  245. Paul on August 3rd, 2011 1:45 am

Well, in my opinion, after crossing the threshold of being a billionaire, money will automatically keep following you. Mukesh Ambani’s assets are more valued as per the performance of the stock market. Today he might have $30 Billion. If the stock market performs good, Mr.Ambani will go home with maybe $5-10 Billion more in matter of few days or months…So, $1 Billion is not a very big sum to him at his current situation as he may gain or loose many such billions in short time frame. And this is that Billion dollar of all his assets that he and his family will get to enjoy in reality for his lifetime achievement. All other assets are those that they have the potential to spent on what they want to, but they are not doing it. The fact is even $1 Billion is too much of money for an entire family to spent lavishly during their lifetime!!!How much percentage of your total wealth would you spent on your residence? Being born rich and being among the richest in the world is not his fault…

Does Rashtrapathi need a Rasthtrapathi Bhavan? Do Lawmakers need a Parliament House? Do Judges need huge structures to house their court rooms? Perhaps No. Each generation builds monuments to remember them by if they have the money. Let Ambani live in a safe and comfortable house from which he could operate and provide a million jobs to others. Wish him well. Government gets taxes from him. Doesn’t it? And Government is a big employer. Well, who is funding Government? People like Ambani and his employees. Aren’t they?

Because you have poverty all around, doesn’t mean you don’t build. You build and be an inspiration to others.

OK, i agree the house is ugly from the outside, and yes he shouldn’t have built it in the slums maybe where all the other rich or middle class people live!! BUT it is entirely up to him what he does with his money, all those that don’t agree your just HATERS, JEALOUS, TWISTED people who have no ambition in life to succeed so to reinsure yourselves you have to pick faults at the people who have that drive to be something in their life, at the end of the day he has created 600 jobs!!! Putting people on payroll, how many of you have put someone on payroll and on top of that he has created jobs at Reliance Industries?!?!?! In terms of donating money these people don’t make it public because they will get publicity for it, and they don’t want that! They are giving money because they want to, not to have an article about them in newspapers so get the facts first, and how many of you can say HONESTLY that you donate $1 or £1 or your equivalent currency a month?? Point being if you can’t donate a small fraction a month how can you order someone to donate millions! Mr. Mukesh Ambani,

I have been reading about the 2 billion dollar worth house you have built for your family of five with a staff of 600 to serve your needs. Plus extras like180 cars, 3 helipads, swimming pools , ballrooms, several lounges , cinema hall and what naught. If that has made your and your family happy, then fine, though to most people it seems ridiculous. But that is not for us to judge as it is with your money and efforts you have done so. Also all this is relative, in the sense that to an absolutely destitute person , even a 2 or 3 bed house or a person having more than 3 pairs of clothes and 2 cars would seem to be living in wasteful luxury, considering he has no food, no clothes and no home. So to each his own.

Now please think about building NIGHT SHELTERS, an even bigger place that will accomodate the poorest of the poor and needy, the sick and the infirm and homeless, where they can have a nights rest after their hard day of work , plain cots to lay their weary heads, small cubicles where they can have a bath and refresh themselves and also a free kitchen where they can fill their stomachs with simple meals before going to bed. You may limit the centre to say a 1000 people a night or any number that pleases you, providing them with the above basic facilities. Whoever is in need can then come to your Night Haven and atleast spend a few hours away from the misery and cares of their daily life. Please staff it with caring and considerate people who will behave towards these unfortunates with politeness and respect and not lord it over them. They could leave in the morning after a plain nutritous breakfast to fortify themselves for the day ahead , while another contingent of staff can come and clean up the place during the rest of the day and cook and make things ready for the next night.

This would be my dream if I had money like you, but if you can find it in your heart to do something along these lines, which with your riches, power and capabalities you surely can, and Gods Blessings will be such upon you that the joy and happiness you will then get will far surpass anything you have experienced till now. Please do think about it and your name and deeds will be written in letters of gold for all time. Thank you for listening to this if you happen to receive and read this plea.
