Maybe I am Rich After All

by SMD

One of my other guest bloggers on the Personal Finance blog, Rob, posted this story about the Global Rich List.

This site allows you to enter in your annual salary and find out where you rank in the entire earth’s population. Here’s my result:

You are in the top 5.57% richest people in the world. There are 5,665,257,352 people poorer than you. How do you feel about that?

A bit richer we hope. Please consider donating just a small amount to help some of the poorest people in the world. Many of their lives could be improved dramatically or even saved if you donate just one hour’s salary (approx $29.86)

Oh, and in case you’re interested you are the 334,742,648 richest person in the world.

This really does start to put things into perspective. In my little corner of the world, I’m closer to the bottom 5% than the top [especially if you factor age into the equation]. The site lays a little guilt trip to get you to donate to CARE…don’t think I’ll tackle the world poverty topic today, but it does get me thinking.

Usually when someone puts something like world poverty in your face, the snap reaction is, “what can I do” either in a positive or defeated tone. For me I like to just let the reality of the world’s financial situation work it’s way into my inner universe. I let it rearrange my way of seeing things. From there, maybe a real action will come.

I visited the site as well. It’s a little misleading since it bases your wealth on your salary (versus net worth). We all know people who make a lot, but spend even more, hence they are not as wealthy as the site suggests. But their point is still valid. People in develped countries are much wealthier than almost everyone else.

FMF, you are right net worth would have been a much better measure, wonder why they used salary?
